About this hurricane simulator

Hurricane Simulator: wind, storm surge and rain on a beach town

What would a hurricane do to a beach town? Send a Category 1 to 5 storm ashore and watch the wind peel roofs and bend palms, the storm surge and waves flood the streets, cars float and boats wash into town. Ask how high surge gets, whether to evacuate, what the eye feels like, why the right side is worst, why slow storms flood, and whether houses on stilts are safer. Every answer uses real wind speeds, water depths and rainfall.

How to use the hurricane simulator

  1. Ask a question: the hurricane approaches, the radar shows where it is, and the card explains what happens to the town with real numbers.
  2. Storm tab: pick Category 1–5, move the landfall, slow the storm down, change the sea floor and tide, or mix the ingredients that make a hurricane.
  3. Camera: Town, Beach (on the pier), Street, Close and Map. Drag to rotate, pinch or scroll to zoom. Tap a house to see its flood zone.

Winds follow the Holland hurricane profile; surge, waves and rain flood the ground according to its height. Damage uses wind tables adjusted for coastal building codes.
