About this tornado simulator

Tornado Simulator: what a tornado does to a town, and how to stay safe

A 3D small town and a downtown city, and a tornado you control. Ask what an EF3 does to a house, whether a tornado can knock down a skyscraper or pick up a car, or where the safest place to hide is, and watch it happen. Houses, mobile homes, apartment blocks, shops, glass towers, trees and cars are damaged exactly as the Enhanced Fujita damage tables say, and the answer card explains the result with real wind speeds.

How to use the tornado simulator

  1. Ask a question on the right, the tornado runs through town and the card explains what happens, with real wind speeds.
  2. Storm tab: pick EF0–EF5, change the forward speed, draw your own path, or mix the ingredients that make a tornado.
  3. Shelter tab: see which hiding places are safe for the winds the house actually felt.
  4. Camera: Town, Chase, Ground (standing in the street), Close (the house or car in the question) and Map (the damage survey). Drag to rotate, pinch or scroll to zoom.

The wind is a moving Rankine vortex with inflow. Every house, tree, car and pole records its peak wind, and its damage follows the Enhanced Fujita damage tables.
